—a neighborhood where his father had calloused his soles
on unpaved boulevards,
closed off from the world by Southern mentality.
the train had brought us back downtown,
a re-claim staked at center court.
I was utterly surprised and delighted to learn earlier this summer that my poem, “we and the metro”, had been accepted by District Lit for their Washington DC Special Feature. It’s always special when you can write about your home, and be recognized for it. This poem took me 25 years of living and listening to write and I am honored that it is listed beside such wonderful pieces by Kim Roberts and Zein El-Amine, among others!
Thank you, District Lit. Enjoy!
